Raptr steps into video social media with Plays.tv

Raptr‘s new platform called Plays.tv could be compared to Twitch because it focuses on video games, but it’s probably more like Vine or Instagram for the gamer.

The Plays client creates a buffer of your video game that is just a few minutes to a whole play session long. If you experience a great moment in your game that you’d like to share with your friends, you open the Plays client, select the sequence you’d like to keep, then share it with your friends and the rest of the world on Plays.tv.

“To me, chatting with my friends about all the funny and amazing things that happened in the game we just played is often as much fun as playing the game itself,” CEO of Raptr Dennis Fong explains in the press release. “Everyone experiences moments they want to remember when gaming; Plays.tv makes saving those moments as easy as taking a screenshot and provides a fun community to share them with.”

A comparison can easily be made between Plays.tv and Nvidia’s ShadowPlay, which also runs in the background as you play your favorite video game. However, unlike Nvidia’s software, which only works with its Nvidia GPUs, Plays can capture the video and play it back on nearly any Nvidia, AMD, or Intel video card that contains an on-board video encoder.

Currently, there are no ads running on Plays.tv, but don’t be fooled, this is just because Raptr has yet to find an effective way to monetize the platform. Take advantage of it while you can.
